Dating back to the 15th century, these cookies originally took the form of a pie-like tart featuring a butter almond flour latticework crust and black currant filling. Although it’s certainly a delicious end to any meal, bakers in Linz, Austria thought of an easier and more accessible way to showcase them in their shops around the holidays—as cookies.

First, I added all the wet ingredients to my mixer, blended it together and then added all the dry ingredients. I divided the dough in half, wrapped it in plastic wrap and chilled it in the fridge for an hour but it can be chilled up to 1 day.
Then I lined 2 cookie sheets with parchment paper. I floured one of Amy large cutting boards, rolled out the dough and used the cookie cutter to make the hearts and used a small shot glass to cut the center out of each heart.
I baked them at 350 degrees for 10 minutes, let them cool for about 15 minutes and filled each hole with the jam and sprinkle the tops with powdered sugar.
